Drew House, Midville

Jennifer Drew writes: This house has always belonged to the Drew Family. My name is Jennifer Drew and I plan to restore this house. I have already started clearing it out and am extremely excited about it. It was always my Dad’s dream to restore the old “Drew” house and I promised him before he passed away that I would try my best to see it done. Thanks to the help of many locals, such as Steve Bunn and Charlie Rackins, it is coming together nicely.

Musella Gin & Cotton Company

This is a classic Cadillac, perhaps a 1949 model.

Fire Truck, Marvin

There’s a volunteer fire department next door to this old building, which appears to have been a store at one time. The truck looks to be military surplus. As to Marvin, it’s not even on the map, but there are signs marking the community, which I presume was named for Marvin Yancey, since that’s the name of the VFD.

Boston Butt Sale, Guyton

Relatively inexpensive, Boston Butt is actually from the upper front shoulder of the pig. It’s used to make barbeque, Brunswick stew, and everything in between. A gentleman at this location* was smoking them and a steady procession of customers were just driving through and picking them up. I regret that I didn’t get a chance to speak to him as the traffic was heavy and I had to wait and wait just to get a shot incorporating the sign and the great old Ford pickup. But if you’re in the area and see this sign, you might want to stop by and pay him a visit. As busy as the place was, it must be good.

Coley House, Circa 1842, Bleckley County

I was very eager to find this house after being made aware of it by Cindy McDonald Swartz, who lives in nearby Goldsboro. I can’t thank her enough for sending me here. This historic property was built by Alcanah (Cain) Robert Coley [sometimes published as Alcainan] (1808 or 1818-1868) & Martha Dikes Coley (1818-1897) and used at times as a travelers’ inn. After changing hands several times, the house is now owned by Alan Johnson, who operates a restaurant here called “Fritters”. Signs on the fence leading to the home suggest they have the best fried green tomatoes in Georgia, as well as local wines and fried Moon Pies.

The house was destroyed by fire in September 2015.

When I was standing by the fence photographing the house, this beautiful Gypsy Vanner horse met me with a friendly greeting and made for a wonderful shot.

Ford F-150 Cotton Trailer, Coffee County

I used to see more of these old modified trucks. They were put into service for various utilitarian needs, like this one, which was likely used as a cotton trailer.

International R-185 Fire Truck, Waynesville

I don’t know if this once did service for the Waynesville community or if it’s just a salvaged truck; this one likely dates to the late 1950s and is in relatively good condition.

Piggly Wiggly Trailer, East Dublin

Piggly Wiggly and S&H Green Stamps was a popular combination when I was growing up in the early 1980s. This was a nice reminder.
