If you’re familiar with the Georgia Grown program of the Department of Agriculture, you’re likely a fan of locally sourced products. From Southern Pecan Pepper Jelly to Pickled Okra to Candied Jalapenos, Lauri Jo’s offers a little something for everyone. I stopped by their retail and production space in Norman Park the other day to pick up a couple of jars of their Southern Sweet Cucumber Pickles, a family favorite. My mother , who says they’re as good as the ones my great-grandmother used to make, called me on the road to ask me to get some. The folks that work for Lauri Jo make you feel right at home and are rightfully proud of their products. I got a look at a big wall map of the United States with pins on all the places Lauri Jo’s has been shipped and sold. There were lots of pins.

Update: After ten years, Lauri Jo closed her doors in 2019, but her products are still available. Just search the name online.

This structure was demolished by 2012. Jeff writes: On the left side of the ground floor was my grandfather’s drugstore from the 1930’s through the 1950’s. His name was T.E. Megahee, a pharmacist, and was often called “Doc”. At one time a doctor occupied part of the second floor. In about 1960 the drugstore was moved across the street and west one block and was owned by my father, also a pharmacist, until his retirement in 1989.

Begun in 1903, this was the home of Marion Davis Norman. M. D. borrowed the money to build this house from his father, and his brother built an identical house across the highway in the same manner. For years, there was a persistent rumor that a tunnel connected these two houses, but that has been proven incorrect. The house is presently owned and being renovated by concert pianist Tommy Whiddon, and will eventually be returned to its former grandeur. Thanks to Norma Morris of Fitzgerald for this information. Mrs. Morris is the granddaughter of M. D. and Sarah Norman.
