This landmark on Bemiss Road remains, but more of the letters have fallen off the sign as of 2016. The property was originally known as the Biles Farm, beginning in the 1880s, and was purchased by the Vallotton family in the 1940s to accommodate their growing dairy operation. The original Biles farmhouse was occupied by the dairy foreman for many years. This barn was built in the 1940s, as I understand it, and the dairy was in operation until 1990. Hugh Vallotton, son of dairy founder Joseph Edward Vallotton, managed the farm until his death in 1979 and his nephew, Robert Vallotton, took over and remained at the helm until retiring in 1990.

I wish I’d been able to get a better photograph of this man, who could often be found selling boiled peanuts, grapes and watermelons in a parking lot near the courthouse in downtown Valdosta. He was always smiling and waved when you passed by his truck.

This exceptional Neoclassical Revival mansion was built in 1902 for Thomas Griggs Converse, Sr., (1854-1932) by Valdosta architect Alex Everett.

Located in the gardens of the Crescent, this structure was built at a time when kindergarten was a relatively new concept in America, and available only to the wealthy. Also, it’s a rare octagonal structure, of which very few were ever built in Georgia.

Originally built as the wash house for the Crescent, this structure was refashioned in 1979 to serve its present purpose.

My date for this structure is an educated guess. A number of buildings in the immediate vicinity date to 1904.
Update: Since I first photographed this building in 2008, it has been repainted, restored, and now houses law offices.

There are several historic Victorian cottages in this neighborhood, approaching Valdosta from the east on US84, and they’re in varying states of restoration at this time.
